The First Wimbledon Match & Brief History of Championships

The Wimbledon Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club, also known as the England Club, based at Church Road, Wimbledon, London, England, is a private members’ tennis club. It is best known as the venue for the Wimbledon Championships, the only Grand Slam tennis event still held on grass. Wimbledon’s first match was held 9 July 1877.

Introduction

The Championships, Wimbledon is also known as the simply Wimbledon or the Championships is the most prestigious tennis tournament of the world. It’s played annually in the month of last Monday of June or first Monday of July for two weeks.

Matches are played in Gentlemen, Ladies, and mixed in singles & Doubles categories. Players got entries in the tournament based on International ranking in both categories.

Primarily two courts are used for the event, namely Center Court and Court No. 1 and remaining other 17 courts are used regularly for routine play and other matches.

Tickets

The Wimbledon Tickets are distributed via public ballot and via debentures are allocated to the public. Debenture holders can sell their tickets to other peoples.

Prize Money

Prize money is awarded to winning player in each category which is announced well before the commencement of the tournament. It’s being increased every year gradually. In 2019 it was 2,350,000 £ for Gentlemen’s Singles and Doubles and 2018 it was 2,250,000 for both categories. You can view category-wise details of the last five years.

1st Wimbledon Tennis Match of History

The All England (Wimbledon tennis) club was established in 1868 on 04 acres in outside London city and after 9 years first match of Wimbledon held. The club was supposed to be croquet club but later on the popularity of Tennis sport overtook it..

The first match of the Wimbledon tennis championship was held on 9 July 1877 in history. It was played in the suburb of London city. In the first year, only Men’s Singles or Gentlemen’s Singles event matches were played.

There was a total of 21 participants which were amateurs, which means only club members were allowed to play no open to compete for the general public. The champion of the first match won 25-guinea trophy at that time.
